So, What Is Homelessness?

McKinney Vento-Act Defines Homelessness as:
“Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.”
This includes individuals who are:
Doubled up
In a motel, hotel, trailer park, camp ground
Transitional or emergency shelter
Car, park, public space, bus, train, substandard housing, or similar setting
What Does Student Homelessness Look Like In Chicago?
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) reported serving 16,451 homeless students during the 2018-19 schools year
11%, or 1,834 students lived in shelters
Chicago’s homeless students are overwhelmingly children of color, at 98.3%. While 81% of homeless students were black, they comprise only 36.6% of citywide enrollment.
