So, What Is Homelessness?

McKinney Vento-Act Defines Homelessness as:

“Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.”

This includes individuals who are:

Doubled up

In a motel, hotel, trailer park, camp ground

Transitional or emergency shelter

Car, park, public space, bus, train, substandard housing, or similar setting

 

What Does Student Homelessness Look Like In Chicago?

  • Chicago Public Schools (CPS) reported serving 16,451 homeless students during the 2018-19 schools year

  • 11%, or 1,834 students lived in shelters

  • Chicago’s homeless students are overwhelmingly children of color, at 98.3%. While 81% of homeless students were black, they comprise only 36.6% of citywide enrollment.
